As we approach the end of the year, now is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and take stock of your business development (BD) efforts in 2024. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day pressures, but stepping back to evaluate what worked well, what didn’t, and where there’s room for improvement can set you up for even greater success in 2025, more to follow on that in the New Year.

Reflecting on 2024: 5 questions to ask yourself

Taking time to reflect doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few questions to guide your thinking:

  1. What were your biggest BD successes this year? Think about the moments you felt most proud of your BD achievements. Was it landing a new client, strengthening an existing relationship, or delivering a project that truly exceeded expectations? Pinpointing these successes helps you identify what’s working in your approach.
  2. What worked? Where did your best opportunities come from? Was it attending events, referrals, LinkedIn connections, or existing client relationships? By analysing this, you’ll uncover where your BD efforts were most effective, allowing you to focus your energy on the right areas in 2025.
  3. What challenges did you face? Reflect on the areas where things didn’t go as planned. Were there missed opportunities, conversations that didn’t land, or times when you felt frustrated by how things turned out? Understanding these moments can uncover areas to focus on improving in the year ahead.
  4. Where did you grow the most? Growth often comes from challenges, learning, or stepping out of your comfort zone. What new skills, insights, or habits did you develop this year that helped you improve your BD game?
  5. What feedback did you receive? Think about the feedback you received from clients, colleagues, or mentors. Were there recurring themes? Use this feedback to help shape your approach in 2025.

Looking forward to a prosperous 2025

Reflection is just the first step. The insights you gain from looking back will provide clarity and direction as you move into the new year.

But before jumping into planning, don’t underestimate the power of taking a break. Stepping away from work, even for a short time, can help you recharge, reset, and return with renewed energy and focus. Switching off not only allows your mind to rest but often sparks fresh perspectives and creative ideas when you least expect them.

In January’s edition of Work Winning Ways, we’ll explore how to set New Year ‘BD’ resolutions. We’ll share practical ideas and strategies to help you start 2025 with clarity and purpose.

And don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about our journey through the five key ways to achieve BD success, we’ll pick that back up in February!
